Iraj Najafi is professor of medicine at the Tehran University of Medial Sciences in Iran: He is Senior physician and director of PD at the shariati university hospital and used to be the chief of Nephrology department in the past 20 years (1992-2014). Emeritus professor and for merchairman of Internal Medicine, chief of Nephrology and director of King Fahd Nephro - urology centerat Cairo University. He is the Founding Chairman and Senior Physician of the Cairo Kidney Center, Egypt.
He was born and schooled in Assiut, Upper Egypt, and graduated from Kasr-El-Aini Medical School, Cairo University in June 1962. He specialized in Internal Medicine and obtained his doctorate degree from the same university in 1969. He subsequently received training in Nephrology in Cairo, Paris, London and Minnesota universities. After obtaining his MRCP-UK in 1972, he was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Collleges of Physicians of Edinburgh (1982) and London (1986). He was subsequently appointed International Advisor to both colleges, and chaired the Organizing Committee and Panel of Examiners of the MRCP PACES examination in Egypt.
Professor Barsoum edited 2 books, and authored 45 chapters on kidney diseases in 2 encyclopedias and 27 international text books. He published close to 200 papers with about 3000 citations (H-index 25, i10 index 45). His main research interests are schistosomal nephropathies, tropical nephrology, kidney transplantation, and epidemiology of kidney disease. He was the Founding Editor of Kidney Forum, the first official journal of the Arab Society of Nephrology and Renal Transplantation, served as guest editor for Artificial Organs, and Journal of Advanced Research, associate-, section- or advisory editor for 16 international journals and reviewer for 40 periodicals.
Professor Barsoum chaired many academic, strategic and regulatory national committees in the Egyptian Ministries of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Health. He chaired the Medical Sector Committee for Egyptian Universities, the Steering Committee for National Medical Qualification Reform, and the Nephro-urology scientific committee of the Supreme National Drug Policies Commission. He served as member on many other National councils and committees including the Health and Nutrition Council of the Ministry of Scientific Research, the Supreme National Committee for Organ Transplantation and the Medical Ethics Committee of the Egyptian Medical Syndicate.
He was the founding president of the African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN), served as President of the Egyptian (ESNT) and Arab (ASNRT) Societies of Nephrology and Renal Transplantation, vice president of the International Society for Artificial Organs (ISAO) and the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation (MESOT). He was elected councilor of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and subsequently appointed member of the management committee, then elected Secretary-General. During his tenor with the latter society he served as director of the Fellowship and Sister Renal Centers programs and chaired the nominating, awards, publications and clinical practice guidelines committees. He was elected councilor of the International Society of Hemodialysis, and member of the Executive Board of the KDIGO Clinical Practice Guidelines initiative.
He received many awards, including the most prestigious Egyptian Nile Award and the First Class Order of Arts and Sciences and the Order of the Lion Grand Officer of Senegal. He was the recipient of the Egyptian State Appreciation Prize, the ISN Roscoe Robinson and the Pioneer awards, the International Award of the National Kidney Foundation of the USA, the Tarek Suhaimat Award of the Arab Society of Nephrology and Renal Transplantaion and many other regional and national shields and honors. Prof. Tarek Zakaria ElBaz is currently president elect of the arab society of nephrology and renal transplantation ASNRT 2017-2019. He earned his medical graduation in December 1979, at Al Azhar School of Medicine. He received his basic training and internship at the same facility. Later on, he experienced training in nephrology for one year at Edward Herriot Hospital in Lyon, France. He accomplished his Master degree in Internal Medicine 1983, and M.D. degree in Internal Medicine 1989, from Al Azhar University. He is currently emeritus Professor of Internal Medicine & Nephrology former chief division of nephrology (2010-2015), Al Azhar University. He has supervised around 60 master & M.D. degree thesis in internal medicine & Nephrology, with 50 publications & multiple editorials. Prof. T. ElBaz had served at the editorial board of Nephron Clinical Practice. He has been instrumental in the establishment of an active transplantation unit at Al Azhar University since 1992. His fields of research interests are in adequacy of dialysis, diabetic nephropathy & CKD-MBD, and is currently a member of the middle east committee for evaluation & implementation of CKD-MBD guidelines. The concept of CNE outreach program has developed during Febuary 2014 reaching out of our boards to interact and gain new experiences by visiting Sudan where a conjoint meeting was arranged between both societies. Prof. T. ElBaz extended this action with members of the ESNT board to Ethiopia which undermined Egyptian nephrologists' duties to other nations. He has participated in various national and international meetings as a faculty and has over 200 presentation in nephrology. He has received various honors both institutional & governmental.
Prof. Ismail is a renal pathologist with over 15 years experience in interpretation of native and transplant renal biopsies. She is an Assistant Professor of pathology at the Medical School, Beni-Suef University and is the director of Pathlab; a private renal pathology service in Cairo, Egypt. Prof. Ismail is a member of the renal pathology committee of the international society of nephrology (ISN), an ISN Educational Ambassador for renal pathology and a former member of the educational committee of the International Renal pathology Society.
